Leviticus 25 speaks of the Hebrew Sabbath or you may have heard people pronounce it Shabbat. This chapter goes through the Lords design for the land that He was giving the Israelites. Let the land rest completely every 7 years, and then every 7 sevens, the land would rest on the 49th year and then also the 50th year, which was called the Jubilee.
Imagine your livelihood, all food from the ground, coming from diligent and careful farming – and you HAD to take every 7th year completely off. You HAD to rely on the LORD giving you a bumper crop every sixth year so you could eat from it until you get the harvest the eighth year, and verses 21 and 22 indicate they really were still dependent on that 6th yr harvest until the fullness of the ninth year!
This is the plight of the human thinking and way – some will always look for the no work solution while most others work constantly and never give themselves rest. Both thumb their nose at the LORD and His ways!
It’s like a kid who is told they have to take a nap. The child will always protest. Then another day they want to take a nap at exactly the wrong time and place.
There is a very rich spiritual lesson being taught throughout the Mosaic law – and if you want to delve more, then do a study of Hebrews. But there is always more than meets the eye with the LORD.
Physically, the LORD put in the law for the Hebrews to have intentional times of fasting and feasting. He is interested in how our day to day on this good earth goes!!
Life is hard, but God is good, and He makes life better and joyous. It’s not always fasting!
It’s not always being serious – it’s not always being solemn.
Can you imagine taking a complete year off every seven years, and eating the same way you did while you tilled the ground hard?!
I think the Lord is much more gracious than we give Him credit for!!
Enjoy and thank Him for His goodness!
God bless you all
